O arcebispo Desmond Tutu premiou com Award de 2008 o “Children’s peace prize” ou o “Prêmio 2008 Criança pela paz” a uma menina de 17 anos de idade 17- que cresceu em uma área precária de Rio de Janeiro onde as guerras da droga acontecem. O tiroteio impede frequentemente que as crianças atendam à escola, às vezes por meses em um momento.
Mayra organizou uma marcha de protesto para alunos.

Holandês Nanko camionete Buuren, diretor da fundação de Ibiss, tem lutado pelos residentes e pelas crianças da rua dos precários bairros brasileiros chamados de favelas por anos.
É a pessoa que nomeou Mayra para a concessão deste prêmio.


Prêmio Criança pela paz

O Children’s peace award ou o Prêmio Criança pela paz foi introduzido durante uma reunião de nobres laureados premiados em Roma em 2005.
Os candidatos devem cumprir as seguintes exigências:

. Tenha 12 e 18 anos.
. Seja uma personalidade de inspiração.
. Seja ativo por alguma hora no campo de direitos da criança e adolescents
. Possa mostrar que suas atividades conduziram aos resultados concretos.

A fundação holandesa Kidsright organiza a apresentação anual do Children's prêmio da paz

Archbishop Desmond Tutu awared the 2008 Children's Peace Prize 2008 to a 17-year-old girl who grew up in a Rio de Janeiro slum where drug wars raged. Gunfire often prevented children from attending school, sometimes for months at a time. Mayra organised a protest march for school children.

Dutchman Nanko van Buuren, director of the Ibiss foundation, has been fighting for the residents and the street children of the Brazilian slums (favelas) for years. He is the one who nominated Mayra for the award:

"She is always in front, and ensures that parades are held. She represents what the Children's Peace Prize stands for."

Mr Van Buuren says young Brazilians have become more vocal after the 1980s military dictatorship:
"Brazilians have become strongly politicised, including the children born after 1984, such as Mayra. She was fortunate to be born in a family where both parents are still alive. Most families in the slums consist of single parents. Quite often, the other parent was the victim of a stray bullet or was killed while fighting in a drug gang".

Mayra's parents wanted to offer their daughter a proper education, which is why they sent her to a school just outside their own district.

Children's Peace Prize
The Children's Peace Prize was introduced during a meeting of Noble Prize laureates in Rome in 2005. Nominees must meet the following requirements:

· be aged between 12 and 18 years old.
· be an inspiring personality.
· having been active for some time in the field of children's rights.
· be able to show that their activities have led to concrete results.

The Dutch foundation Kidsright organises the annual presentation of the Children's Peace Prize.

De week van...Mayra Avellar Neves
In het televisiedagboek ‘De week van..’ volgt EénVandaag deze week Mayra Avellar Neves. Deze 17-jarige Braziliaanse ontving donderdag uit handen van de Zuid-Afrikaanse aartsbisschop Desmond Tutu de Internationale Kindervredesprijs, een initiatief van de Nederlandse stichting KidsRights. Mayra woont in een sloppenwijk in Rio de Janeiro en strijdt sinds haar elfde tegen het geweld en de onveiligheid in haar omgeving. Ze organiseerde verschillende protestmarsen en werkt aan een documentaire over het leven in de favela. Deze week kwam Mayra in Nederland aan en bereidde zich voor op de bijzondere prijsuitreiking in de Ridderzaal.
